General Nutrition Advice

The type of foods you eat during recovery after having any type of oral surgery, including dental implants, must be adjusted.

Pedro will recommend a special diet for each patient. The foods he recommends will depend on the type of procedure that has been done, the extent of the surgery, the impact on chewing and oral function, and how long you will take to recover.

A liquid diet should be followed for a few days after oral surgery. You may then move on to a diet of soft foods, gradually adding food from your normal diet once you have been given the go-ahead from Pedro. Keep in mind there may be some types of food that he will recommend you stay away from for entirely, depending on the procedure you have undergone. Foods like sticky sweets and some hard nuts may be too much for a recovering mouth to handle.

A nutrient-rich diet should be followed regardless of whether you are in the liquid or soft-food phase. Minerals and nutrients are important for the healing process. Below is a list of Pedro’s favourite post-procedure foods. They can also be helpful for patients struggling with a toothache or sore gums, although any patient experiencing an abnormal amount of discomfort should request a visit with Pedro nevertheless.

Teeth whitening

Teeth whitening is an effective cosmetic treatment, but the results can easily be undone by consuming certain foods or chemicals directly after treatment. It is critical that you avoid the following for at least 24 hours after your teeth whitening treatment:

  • Food and drink that can stain teeth
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Mouthwash
  • Coloured toothpaste

Pedro’s advice is to stick to food and drink that is relatively bland in colour. This includes water, milk, potatoes, plain pasta, white sauces and plain cereals, fish and chicken. Avoiding dark-coloured food and drink for the first 24 hours can help to maintain the long-term effects of a teeth whitening procedure.

If you are having trouble deciding whether a food will stain your teeth, ask yourself whether the food or drink would stain a white shirt. If it would, then it’s likely to have the same effect of your teeth. Avoid these items to maintain your brilliant smile. This advice can help those who want to avoid staining in the first place.
